How acupuncture helps with PCOS/PMOS
-

Restores regular ovulation
Irregular or absent ovulation is the main barrier to pregnancy for people with PCOS/PMOS. Acupuncture helps boost blood flow to the ovaries and calms the nervous system, supporting more regular cycles and healthy egg development.
-

Reduces unwanted symptoms
Up to 80% of people with PCOS/PMOS have insulin resistance, which disrupts hormones and ovulation. Combined with nutrition and lifestyle support, PMOS acupuncture improves insulin sensitivity and reduces symptoms such as irregular cycles, acne and unwanted hair growth.
-

Balances key hormones
Acupuncture for PCOS helps reduce testosterone and other androgen (male hormone) levels, while regulating luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), so your ovaries can develop and release healthy eggs naturally.
PCOS (now known as PMOS) is treatable — and acupuncture can help
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) — which was officially renamed Polymetabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) in mid-2026 — is a complex hormonal condition affecting up to 1 in 10 women. It's a leading cause of infertility. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, acupuncture for PMOS offers a gentle, natural and effective way to help your body restore balance.
Kind Words
Our holistic PMOS/PCOS acupuncture treatment combines Eastern and Western medicine
While regulating your menstrual cycle is a key aim at our PCOS acupuncture San Diego clinic, we look beyond this single indicator and take a broader, more holistic approach — which requires a deep understanding of energetic imbalances, nutrition and insulin resistance.
PCOS/PMOS is a Western diagnosis, but Chinese medicine looks deeper, at the underlying pattern of imbalance behind it. That means two people with the same Western diagnosis can have very different Eastern diagnoses, and we always treat according to both. So your treatment plan at our clinic may look quite different from another patient's, even if you share the same PCOS/PMOS diagnosis.
We use specially formulated Chinese herbal formulas alongside Western supplements to help regulate ovulation, improve egg quality, and support a full-term pregnancy.
Where helpful, we also draw on wearable health tools such as watches and rings to track your basal body temperature and blood glucose levels, giving us more insight into what's happening hormonally throughout your month.
For people trying to conceive, whether naturally or with support from IUI or IVF, this individualized approach — combining acupuncture for PCOS and fertility with nutrition, lifestyle changes, and targeted supplementation — can be a powerful ally in your fertility journey.

Frequently asked questions
-
The name Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) was always a bit limiting — it focused on specific symptoms, such as ovarian cysts, that not every patient has. The new name, Polymetabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), better reflects what's going on for most patients: underlying insulin resistance and blood glucose imbalances that drive hormonal imbalances. It's a more accurate description of the full spectrum of presentations we see.
-
Yes. While there's no one-size-fits-all approach, PCOS acupuncture in San Diego offers a gentle, natural way to support your body in restoring balance. Research shows acupuncture for PMOS can help reduce elevated testosterone, improve insulin sensitivity, and regulate LH, all of which support healthier ovulation, reduce symptoms, and improve fertility outcomes.
-
There's no single "best" treatment, because no two PCOS/PMOS patients present the same way. We take an individualized approach, combining acupuncture with specially formulated Chinese herbal medicine, Western supplements, and nutrition support tailored to your unique hormonal picture and insulin resistance.
-
Acupuncture can support regular natural ovulation by improving blood flow to the ovaries, regulating hormone levels, reducing stress and cortisol levels, and calming the nervous system. Over time, this can promote more frequent natural ovulation cycles and healthy egg development.
-
Clinical studies indicate that acupuncture can help bring back a missing period for people with PCOS/PMOS by stimulating ovulation and regulating hormones.
It works by modulating sympathetic nerve activity to the ovaries, which increases ovarian blood flow. Acupuncture also reduces testosterone levels while normalizing the ratio between luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), two key hormones involved in ovulation.
There's also good research to show acupuncture combined with Letrozole or Clomid is superior to the medication alone at regulating ovulation and improving pregnancy rates.
While we can't guarantee any outcomes — no ethical practitioner can — we will always take a holistic approach to your reproductive health, looking beyond your cycle alone to address the underlying hormonal and metabolic imbalances driving your symptoms.
-
We generally recommend consistent weekly or twice-monthly treatment over 3-4 months to see meaningful, lasting improvement. However, there isn't a “magic number” of treatments — it really depends on your individual symptoms and your health or conception goals. We'll lay out a recommended treatment plan for you after your initial consultation.
-
We allow two hours for your initial consultation, which includes a thorough review of your medical history and backstory, plus an acupuncture treatment. Subsequent consultations run for one hour, including about 30-45 minutes of acupuncture treatment time.
-
Possibly — and that's okay. We believe in an integrated approach and have a strong referral network of trusted Western medicine providers.
In fact, research shows combining acupuncture with medication can improve outcomes beyond medication alone — one meta-analysis of over 1,311 cases found acupuncture alongside letrozole significantly boosted pregnancy rates, while other research shows it can enhance follicular development when combined with clomiphene citrate (Clomid).
We're happy to work in partnership with your wider care team, whatever that looks like for you.
