The Fourth Trimester: Postpartum Care with Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine
At Bloom Acupuncture & Fertility, our care doesn’t stop at delivery. In fact, some of the most meaningful support we offer happens after birth—during the fourth trimester. This is a powerful, tender window of healing and transition, and it deserves just as much attention as pregnancy itself.
Postpartum care isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. Your body has done something incredible, and now it’s time to replenish, recover, and rebuild. Chinese medicine gives us a beautiful framework to support you emotionally, physically, and hormonally during this time.
Why Postpartum Care Matters
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the postpartum period—often called the “Golden Month”—is considered a critical window for healing. During this time, the body is vulnerable and open. With the right care, it can recover fully and even become stronger. Without it, imbalances can linger—showing up later as fatigue, anxiety, irregular cycles, low milk supply, or future fertility challenges.
At Bloom, I remind my patients that how you heal after birth really matters. This is your chance to set the stage for long-term wellness and hormonal balance.
How Acupuncture Supports Postpartum Healing
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are gentle, effective tools to help your body reset after birth. Here’s what we focus on:
Replenishing Blood and Qi: Labor and delivery are draining. Acupuncture and herbs help rebuild strength and support deep recovery.
Balancing Hormones: Postpartum hormones can be unpredictable. We help smooth the transition and support mood, sleep, and your cycle.
Supporting Breastfeeding: Acupuncture can help boost milk supply, relieve engorgement, and even prevent mastitis.
Calming the Nervous System: If you’re feeling anxious, overstimulated, or exhausted, acupuncture helps your body switch out of survival mode and back into rest.
Aiding Physical Recovery: Whether you had a vaginal delivery or C-section, this medicine supports tissue healing, reduces inflammation, and gently eases pain.
Gentle Postpartum Practices Rooted in Chinese Medicine
Here are a few of the key postpartum rituals I often recommend to support recovery and nourish your body:
1. Warmth is Essential
In TCM, warmth is healing—especially postpartum. Your body is open and vulnerable after birth, and warmth helps seal and protect that space.
Drink warm teas, broths, and soups
Avoid cold/raw foods like smoothies or salads (especially in the early weeks)
Keep your feet, low back, and abdomen warm and covered
Try warm foot soaks with lavender and Epsom salt in the evening to relax and ground yourself
2. Nourish with Food That Heals
Postpartum food should be nutrient-rich, warming, and easy to digest. Some of my favorites include:
Bone broth, red dates, goji berries, beets, and grass-fed meats to rebuild Blood and Qi
Soups, stews, and congee to support digestion and energy
Hydrating drinks like warm lemon water, coconut water, or gentle teas to keep fluids up (especially if nursing)
3. Rest and Rebuild
This is not the time to "bounce back." This is the time to slow down and receive care. That might look like:
Sleeping when the baby sleeps, even if it’s short naps
Saying yes to help (and no to things that drain you)
Doing breathwork, meditating, or even just sitting still for 5 quiet minutes a day
4. Postpartum Herbs and Supplements
This phase calls for gentle, nourishing support. Here are some options I commonly recommend at Bloom:
To Rebuild and Replenish:
Goji berries + red dates – Nourish Blood and gently boost energy
Nettle tea – High in iron and minerals for postpartum recovery
To Support Milk Supply:
Fenugreek – A classic lactation herb that’s easy to find
Blessed thistle – Often paired with fenugreek for added lactation support
For Mood and Hormonal Balance:
Magnesium glycinate – Supports nervous system, sleep, and stress
B-complex vitamins – Key for energy, mood regulation, and rebuilding nutrient stores
Omega-3s (DHA + EPA) – Anti-inflammatory and excellent for brain and hormone health
We always customize based on your needs and make sure anything you take is safe—especially if you're breastfeeding.
(Don’t begin any new supplements without checking with your own healthcare provider first. Everyone has their own individual needs and requirements.)
Acupuncture Helps You Feel Like You Again
I usually suggest starting postpartum acupuncture 7–10 days after delivery. The visits are calm, restorative, and completely tailored to what your body and mind need.
Postpartum acupuncture can help:
Shorten postpartum bleeding
Rebuild energy and stabilize mood
Support breastfeeding
Calm anxiety and overwhelm
Regulate hormones and restore your cycle
Support your long-term reproductive health (especially if you're planning to grow your family again later)
